Mahasamadhi Day Message 2026
Shri Shirdi Sai Baba took Samadhi one hundred and eight years back. In the case of a Sadguru, the departure of the soul from the body is not termed as death but as Samadhi. For such great divine souls, Samadhi indicates a process of transgression of the soul from the body in a pre‐decided moment. It also means that during the process of moving‐out from their gross human body and entering into their body‐less divine state, they remain in a state of full consciousness. This volitional act of departure indicates that the gross body is no more an effective instrument for them to carry on with their spiritual responsibilities. Hence, they decide to leave. There are umpteen examples to establish that Sadgurus, in some way or the other, had given prior indications about their departure earlier.
Shri Sainath had given a clear indication, in 1916, on the day of Vijaya Dashmi that His departure was not far‐off. Also, His premonitions on the death of Tatya Kote Patil and the breaking of the brick, which was a gift of His Guru and His life‐long possession, were indicators. Sri Sai Satcharita gives a vivid account about Shri Sai Baba’s last days.
So far so good, but does this lead to the end of the role of the Sadguru in relation to the souls that He had drawn towards Himself and with whom He had ‘Rinanubandha’, i.e., a karmic relationship established through many past lives? Although, many religious and spiritual people hold the view that a Master after leaving His human body cannot help the disciples, yet in the case of Shri Sainath, the experience of the disciples has been quite different. Baba had promised to help His devotees from His tomb. I have had the opportunity of knowing some of the surviving devotees of Baba who had been with Him before His departure. I have spoken with some of them. All of them categorically confirmed that many unexplainable and miraculous events related to Baba were still happening around their existence as was the case earlier when Baba was there in His physical body at Shirdi.
Most of the books written on Baba’s life history and devotee’s experiences undoubtedly establish the happening of certain miracles experienced by Sai devotees, even today. Earlier, there were thousands of devotees mostly confined to Maharashtra. But, today the increase in the number of Sai devotees is an astounding phenomenon which is difficult to explain, and even more difficult to deny. Thousands of temples of Shri Sai have come up in India and many more are at different stages of construction. Where it is not possible for devotees to build Baba’s temples separately, small and big statues have been installed inside the precincts of temple complexes.
The world needs someone to lead it and bring about unity among the strife‐ridden and mutually intolerant religious, social and racial groups. Shri Sai preached and practiced the unity of the highest order based on the principles of love and tolerance in the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. In the 21st century this will lead the world onto the path of peace and progress.

श्री शिरडी साईं बाबा ने एक सौ आठ वर्ष पहले समाधि ली थी। एक सद्गुरु के विषय में, आत्मा का देह-त्याग ‘मृत्यु‘ नहीं बल्कि ‘समाधि‘ कहलाती है। ऐसी महान दिव्य आत्माओं के संदर्भ में ‘समाधि’ एक पूर्व-निर्धारित क्षण में आत्मा द्वारा देह से सीमोल्लंघन की प्रक्रिया को संकेतित करती है। इसका अर्थ यह भी है कि अपनी स्थूल देह को त्याग अपनी निराकार दिव्य स्थिति में प्रवेश करने की प्रक्रिया के समय, वे पूर्ण चेतना की स्थिति में रहते हैं। देह त्यागने का स्वेच्छा से लिया गया यह निर्णय दर्शाता है कि अब यह स्थूल शरीर उनके आध्यात्मिक दायित्वों को पूरा करने के लिए एक प्रभावी माध्यम नहीं रह गया है। इसलिए, वे इसे छोड़ने का निर्णय लेते हैं। यह प्रमाणित करने के लिए ऐसे अनेक उदाहरण हैं कि सद्गुरुओं ने किसी न किसी रूप में अपने महाप्रयाण के संकेत दे दिए थे।
श्री साईंनाथ ने 1916 में विजयादशमी के दिन यह स्पष्ट संकेत दे दिया था कि उनका महाप्रयाण अब दूर नहीं है। साथ ही, तात्या कोते पाटील की मृत्यु के विषय में उनका पूर्वाभास और उस ईंट का टूटना, जो उनके गुरु द्वारा दिया गया उपहार थी और जीवन भर उनके पास रही थी, इस बात के संकेत थे। ’श्री साईं सत्चरित’ में श्री साईं बाबा के अंतिम दिनों का बहुत जीवंत वर्णन किया गया है।
यहाँ तक तो सब ठीक है, किंतु क्या इसका तात्पर्य यह है कि सद्गुरु की भूमिका उन आत्माओं के संबंध में समाप्त हो जाती है, जिन्हें उन्होंने अपनी ओर आकर्षित किया था और जिनके साथ उनका ‘ऋणानुबंध‘ अर्थात् पिछले जन्मों का बना कार्मिक संबंध था? हालाँकि, कई धार्मिक और आध्यात्मिक लोगों का मत है कि सद्गुरु अपने देह-त्याग के बाद अपने शिष्यों की मदद नहीं कर सकते, किंतु श्री साईंनाथ के संबंध में भक्तों का अनुभव इससे बिल्कुल भिन्न रहा है। बाबा ने वचन दिया था कि वे अपनी समाधि से भी अपने भक्तों की सहायता करते रहेंगे। मुझे बाबा के उन कुछ जीवित भक्तों को जानने का अवसर मिला है, जो उनके महाप्रयाण से पहले उनके साथ थे। मैंने उनमें से कुछ लोगों से बातचीत की है। उन सभी ने स्पष्ट रूप से इस बात की पुष्टि की कि बाबा से जुड़ी कई अद्भुत और चमत्कारिक घटनाएँ उनके जीवन में आज भी वैसे ही घट रही हैं, जैसे तब घटती थीं, जब बाबा शिरडी में अपने देह-रूप में रहते थे।
बाबा के जीवन-इतिहास और भक्तों के अनुभवों पर लिखी गई अधिकांश पुस्तकें निस्संदेह इस बात को प्रमाणित करती हैं कि साईं-भक्तों द्वारा अनुभव किए जाने वाले चमत्कार आज भी हो रहे हैं। पहले, हज़ारों (साईं-) भक्त थे, जो अधिकांशतः महाराष्ट्र तक ही सीमित थे। किंतु आज, साईं-भक्तों की संख्या में जो वृद्धि हुई है, वह एक विस्मयकारी घटना है, जिसे समझाना बहुत कठिन है और नकारना उससे भी अधिक मुश्किल है। पूरे भारत में श्री साईं के हजारों मंदिर बन चुके हैं और बहुतों का निर्माण-कार्य विभिन्न स्तरों पर चल रहा है। जहाँ भक्तों के लिए बाबा का अलग से मंदिर बनाना संभव नहीं है, वहाँ मंदिर -परिसरों के भीतर ही उनकी छोटी-बड़ी मूर्तियाँ स्थापित की गई हैं।
(आज) विश्व को किसी ऐसे मार्गदर्शक की आवश्यकता है, जो कि परस्पर टकराव -ग्रस्त और असहिष्णु धार्मिक, सामाजिक एवं प्रजातीय समूहों में एकता ला सके। श्री साईं ने 19वीं सदी और 20वीं सदी के प्रारंभ में प्रेम और सहनशीलता के सिद्धांतों पर आधारित उच्चतम स्तर की एकता का संदेश दिया और स्वयं उसका पालन किया था। 21वीं सदी में, उनका यह संदेश विश्व को शांति और प्रगति के पथ पर ले जाएगा।
